Jane Fonda meets Tron
“You can’t really tell the difference between an at-home fitness video from 1993, 2003, 2013, or [its equivalent] today,” says entrepreneur Mark Mullett.
He’s not wrong. A scan of current fitness apps show the same uniform aesthetic. There’s a mirrored-wall studio with hardwood floors, harsh fluorescent lighting, and uninspiring decor. Every so often, an instructor pulls out a brown medicine ball. It’s not exciting or interesting to look at, and you likely never thought twice about it.
But Mullett, a former talent agent, wanted an experience akin to hitting up a popular boutique studio. So he and his former CAA colleague built Obé, a streaming fitness platform that blends the enthusiasm of old Jane Fonda videos with a contemporary, artsy feel.
Inspired by light artists James Turrell and Dan Flavin, the app delivers a clean, minimalist set that pulses with a dynamic light box which changes colors during the flow of each workout. There are softer, slow-changing colors for yoga, then more…
